By Giuseppe La Spada

Giuseppe La Spada, an interdisciplinary artist born in 1974 in Palermo and raised in Milazzo, explores the human-nature relationship through his art, aiming to raise awareness about environmental issues. Water, a recurring motif, serves as both subject and context in his work, often becoming the medium itself. OCEAN Group Exhibition 8 With a focus on photography, video, and installations—whether three-dimensional, interactive, or processbased—La Spada delves into synesthetic experiences arising from the interplay between artistic languages. His works intertwine art, spirituality, and sustainability, driven by a deep-seated exploration of humanity's existence on Earth. He believes art should serve a purpose and evolve into a "social architecture," leading him to engage in conferences and participatory projects, especially targeting younger generations to foster ecological awareness. Throughout his career, La Spada has been recognized for his contributions to visual arts, winning awards such as the prestigious Webby Award for his ecological web project, Mono No Aware, in 2007. He has collaborated with renowned figures like Ryuichi Sakamoto and shared exhibitions with artists including Damien Hirst, such as the 2018 exhibition Re-Use.
