Sunset and Calm Sea

Sunset and Calm Sea

By Giri Ananda

Born in 1988, Giri Ananda earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Indonesia Institute of the Arts Yogyakarta. His paintings prominently feature themes of sculptural craftsmanship, exploring both corporeal and spiritual aspects. Over time, the visual elements of his work have evolved from beastly or grotesque figures to more serene and tranquil forms, mirroring his personal journey from a fiery individual to a calm and wise one. Despite the evolving narratives, Ananda’s hallmark style remains intact. His signature technique, Plotot, employs intricate lines and gradation, which is particularly emphasized in his latest series, the Beach series. This series reflects his views on the duality of life, drawing analogies with the sea—calm yet constantly ebbing—symbolizing the breadth of human experience and the harmony of the cosmos. His narratives carry meditative values, and the lengthy creation process of his paintings is itself a form of meditation for Ananda. Through his art, he not only shares his philosophical insights but also engages in a deeply personal contemplative practice.
